Notre Dame: Charlie Rice asks President Jenkins to do the “manifestly right thing” for pro-life detainees
American Papist
I will be watching carefully how the “Notre Dame 88″ are treated by Fr. Jenkins. Please, Fr. Jenkins, do the manifesty right thing.
Objecting to Notre Dame President
Chicago Daily Observer
Notre Dame President Fr. John I, Jenkins, CSC, who warmly greeted the abortion president of the U. S. as commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary doctorate, will speak at the City Club this Thursday (Sept. 24) at Maggiano’s Banquets, 111 West Grand (11:30 a.m. reception, 12:00 lunch)…but not a peep is heard from authenticist Catholics about protesting his appearance. Thus doth the fires of passion burn low.

Father John Jenkins Pro-Life Baby Steps
The American Catholic
My opinion on the Cardinal Newman Society’s requests are that the first three I like very much, especially number 2 (Drop criminal charges against those who, through peaceful and civil disobedience, protested last May’s commencement ceremony.)

Professor Emeritus Charles E. Rice of Notre Dame Law School is circulating an Open Letter to Notre Dame President Father John M. Jenkins in which he highlights the “deficiencies” in Jenkins recent “pro-life” announcement. We will get to that in a moment but let’s skip right to the best part — a scathing passage which comes at the end of what is an absolutely relentless, methodical 2,500-word annihilation of the flimsy and now-teetering justifications put forward by the University for sitting on their hands while the criminal justice systems grinds down on the 88 people arrested last May now facing trial for criminal trespass.

Anent Michael Sean Winters’ plaudits for Notre Dame’s president, Fr. John I. Jenkins C.S.C., on America magazine’s group blog In All Things, we too were somewhat encouraged by Fr. Jenkins’ emailed message from the day before yesterday which he addressed to “members of the Notre Dame family.” Yes, it is a very good thing that Fr. Jenkins is now outlining “ways for Notre Dame to become more involved in the pro-life effort,” as Winters puts it. But contrary to Winters’ jaunty and flippant dismissal of last Spring’s protest themes — that “President Obama’s commencement address … undercut the school’s commitment to the pro-life cause” and that “the President’s appearance would do nothing to increase dialogue” — as “canards,” a word taken to mean “falsehoods,” or “fabricated reports,” or even utterances signifying nothing more than the quacking of ducks, it is Winters rather than Notre Dame’s critics of last Spring who offers a ripe target for these nasty pejoratives.

Lost in all of the reporting about Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins announcement that he intends to participate in the March for Life in Washington, DC next January is the surprising disclosure by the former President of the Notre Dame Right to Life club that Father Jenkins has never before accompanied the group to the March for Life. Rather than praise Jenkins for saying he will go, some might wonder why he has never gone before. What sort of commitment to the sanctity of life is Jenkins talking about when he has never one lent the power and prestige of the office of President of Notre Dame to the largest and most important annual gathering of the Pro-Life movement? It would be like claiming to be a black civil rights leader in the mid-20th century but not have marched with Dr. Martin Luther King.

Father Jenkins Writes to ND about Pro-life Cause
America
One of the canards thrown at Father Jenkins during the controversy surrounding President Obama’s commencement address was that it undercut the school’s commitment to the pro-life cause which, as Father Jenkins writes, is “at the heart of Notre Dame’s mission.” Another canard thrown at Father Jenkins was that the President’s appearance would do nothing to increase dialogue, a goal Jenkins cited in his decision to invite the President. Of course, the Catholic community spent much of last spring having that dialogue but today’s letter shows further fruit of Jenkins’ decision.

Does Notre Dame teach irony?
HotAir.com
…his message could be made a little more powerful by the addition of 88 pro-life activists to the march — people instead busy preparing for trials because Fr. Jenkins refuses to drop charges against them for protesting the appearance of President Barack Obama at Notre Dame’s commencement in May. Among those charged is Norma McCorvey, the original Roe, who has long ago switched positions and demonstrates against abortion. Free the ND 88 asks for assistance in asking Fr. Jenkins to show consistency…
Hypocrisy Alert: Notre Dame’s President to Join March For Life in DC
Gateway Pundit
The Man Has No Shame– After his controversial decision to invite and honor the most radical pro-abortion and pro-infanticide president in US history to speak at Commencement ceremonies, Father John Jenkins is now planning on participating in the March for Life in Washington DC.

Notre Dame President John I. Jenkins announced today that he intends to join the “March for Life” this coming January as part of his commitment made last May, according to Jenkins, to bear witness to the sanctity of life. The March for Life is held each year in Washington, DC to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision.
Apparently the irony was lost on Jenkins that while he will be preparing to protest against Roe v. Wade, the actual Roe, Norma McCorvey, will be preparing for her criminal trial for protesting at Notre Dame after she was arrested under orders from Father Jenkins who has, so far, refused to drop the charges brought against McCorvey and the rest of the “ND 88″, the dozens of pro-life protestors arrested last spring for “crimes” such as saying the rosary and wearing pro-life t-shirts.

University president calls last year challenging but rewarding, expresses desire for faculty diversity and stable school finances
Jenkins says Notre Dame ‘in strong position’
South Bend Tribune
Amid the worst recession in decades, the University of Notre Dame hasn’t ordered layoffs, wage freezes or a halt to campus construction. But the Rev. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, isn’t taking anything for granted.
Judge In Notre Dame Protesters Case Rejects Recusal Motion
WSBT.com
A judge has denied a motion to recuse herself from the proceedings of more than 80 anti-abortion advocates who plan to take their trespassing cases to trial. Attorney Thomas Dixon, filed a motion in August asking for a change of judge in the trespassing cases because he believes that St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Jenny Pitts Manier is biased.

The Notre Dame-St. Mary’s Observer is reporting that Father Jenkins made a major address on campus yesterday during which he remarked upon the controversy which accompanied the University’s decision to invite the countries leading pro-abortion advocate, President Barack Obama, to give the University’s 2009 Commencement Address and to award him an honorary degree.
In his annual address to faculty on Tuesday, University of Notre Dame President Fr. John Jenkins called 2008-09 his “most challenging and rewarding year” as president of the University.
