In May of 2009, the University of Notre Dame invited President Barack Obama to deliver the commencement address at the University’s graduation ceremony and to receive an honorary “Doctor of Laws” degree.
Given that President Obama proved clearly in his first 100 days in office that he is the most pro-abortion president in our nation’s history, Catholics and pro-lifers across the country were insulted and incensed.
Protests were mounted and many came to Notre Dame on the day of the commencement simply to pray and stand as witnesses against the senselessness of a Catholic institution honoring a man who so blatantly disdains the Church’s teaching on life issues.
Among those people were 88 who “dared” to venture onto Notre Dame’s campus to bear peaceful, prayerful witness to the sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death while President Obama spoke. These 88 were arrested and hauled off to jail, where some were forced to spend the night.
Those arrested included several priests and nuns, including longtime pro-life activist Fr. Norman Weslin, Norma McCorvy, the “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade, former presidential candidate Alan Keyes and many others.
The Thomas More Society has written a letter to University President Fr. John Jenkins urging him to drop the charges, but he has continued to insist that the situation is out of his hands.
As such, the Thomas More Society has agreed to take on the defense of the ND 88. Read more and stay up to date on the latest news on this case at the FreeTheND88.org website.
