TMS WEEKLY DISPATCH 4/17/26
Here’s the latest news from the past week at Thomas More Society, in our legal battles defending life, family, and freedom.

DOJ EXPOSÉ CONFIRMS BIDEN ADMINISTRATION WEAPONIZED FACE ACT AGAINST PRO-LIFE AMERICANS IN COORDINATION WITH ABORTION INDUSTRY: Thomas More Society welcomes the release this week of an explosive report from the U.S. Department of Justice Weaponization Working Group, based on a review of more than 700,000 internal records, confirming that the Biden Administration systematically weaponized the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act against peaceful pro-life Americans in coordination with abortion industry groups like the National Abortion Federation and Planned Parenthood.
In the Report, DOJ prosecutors called Thomas More Society “quite the racket” and predicted our attorneys would be “particularly…Unpleasant.”
Thomas More Society represented clients in nearly every major FACE Act prosecution examined in the report, including Mark Houck, Paul Vaughn, and Lauren Handy—each of whose cases resulted in presidential pardons or acquittals.
“We are hopeful that today’s findings will help restore the American people’s faith in a justice system that was badly abused," said Peter Breen, TMS Executive Vice President and Head of Litigation. "Weaponizing federal law enforcement against people of faith must never happen again."

NEW YORK COURT HEARS MOTION TO DISMISS LETITIA JAMES' LAWSUIT AGAINST PRO-LIFE PREGNANCY CENTERS: On Wednesday, April 15, a New York court heard Thomas More Society's Anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) motion to dismiss in People of the State of New York v. Heartbeat International, et al., New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit seeking to prohibit pro-life pregnancy centers from sharing information about Abortion Pill Reversal (APR).
"The Attorney General cannot point to a single statement by our clients that has been proven false—because none exists," said Christopher A. Ferrara, TMS Senior Counsel. "This is a SLAPP suit, plain and simple and an attempt by a government official to weaponize litigation to silence pro-life speech she disagrees with."

CALIFORNIA APR HEARING RESCHEDULED TO APRIL 29: Thomas More Society's Summary Judgment hearing in People of the State of California v. Heartbeat International & RealOptions, California Attorney General Rob Bonta's parallel lawsuit targeting pro-life pregnancy centers for sharing information about APR, has been rescheduled to April 29 at the René C. THOMAS MORE SOCIETY SETTLEMENT ESTABLISHES LANDMARK RELIGIOUS LIBERTY PROTECTIONS FOR COAST GUARD: Thomas More Society announced a landmark settlement with the United States Coast Guard that permanently reforms how the service evaluates, trains on, and reports religious accommodation requests. No other service branch has incorporated religious liberty protections as strong as those secured under Jackson v. Mullin.
"Religious accommodation requests cannot be treated as a box-checking exercise," said Peter Breen. "Under this historic settlement, the Coast Guard must evaluate each service member's request on its own merits—not invoke blanket institutional interests to deny them all. This is a model for every branch of the military."

MIRABELLI V. BONTA ANALYZED IN PUBLIC DISCOURSE: Melissa Moschella, professor at the University of Notre Dame’s McGrath Institute for Church Life, has published an insightful article in Public Discourse on the significance of Thomas More Society's U.S. Supreme Court win in Mirabelli v. Bonta, arguing that the ruling is a much-needed corrective that may finally give parental rights the constitutional protection they deserve.
