TMS WEEKLY DISPATCH 7/28/25

Here’s the latest news from the past week at Thomas More Society, in our legal battles defending life, family, and freedom.

Welcome to the TMS Weekly Dispatch for July 28, 2025—with the latest news and updates from the front line, to keep you in-the-know on all things Thomas More Society. If you missed last week’s edition, you can read it here.

Here's a look back at the past week:

ON THE BLOG – SUPREME COURT TERM IN REVIEW: Still trying to catch up on everything that happened at the Supreme Court this judicial term? Read about all the major decisions concerning life, family, and freedom from the past SCOTUS term.

INTERVIEW – TMS SPEAKS WITH DANIELLE WHITE, GENERAL COUNSEL FOR HEARTBEAT INTERNATIONAL: Thomas More Society sat down with Danielle White, General Counsel for Heartbeat International and former TMS summer associate, for a discussion about the legal challenges facing pro-life pregnancy centers and the critical importance of protecting APR.

With 63% of U.S. abortions carried out through the chemical abortion pill, it’s more vital than ever to understand what’s at stake when pro-life advocates fail to protect abortion alternatives—options that the abortion industry’s allies in government are bent on abolishing. Read the full interview with Danielle here.

TMS SPECIAL COUNSEL PUBLISHES BOOK ABOUT RELIGIOUS LIBERTY DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: In a newly released book, Unlocking the Churches: The Legal Victory Against California’s Pandemic-Era Religious Discrimination, TMS Special Counsel Jeffrey Trissell chronicles his experience fighting on the front lines against the lockdown of churches during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trissell recounts three lawsuits challenging California governor Gavin Newsom’s church-closure orders, three trips to the U.S. Supreme Court, and a permanent injunction entered against the Gov. Newsom and California. He also examines questions such as:

  • Can and should constitutional rights be curtailed during a national emergency, or is protection of those rights most important during emergencies?
  • Is worship deserving of more protection than other activities, or is it simply a disposable pastime? If so, why didn’t more faith leaders push back?
  • Is religious liberty quickly becoming a second-tier constitutional right that the government can feel free to ignore?
  • What did the national emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic reveal about the dangers of state laws that contravene the separation of powers doctrine?
  • What legal and moral recourse do the faithful have in the face of unjust laws?

Featuring a compelling forward written by TMS Founder and President Tom Brejcha, Unlocking the Churches dives into an unprecedented historical era, providing thoughtful interpretation of laws protecting religious liberty, and offering encouragement to Christians to live boldly in the spirit of Sir Thomas More.
